Genogram Reflection

As I went through the process of gathering information, I might have had a slight advantage for part of the assignment. I was fortunate that my maternal grandfather with help from his sister had published a genealogy book for their paternal side of the family which was completed when I was in my late teens. My aunt completed one for the maternal side a few years ago so much of the information needed was readily available about my mom's family. My father's family was a little harder to get information on, but I did the best I could.

Something I did not realized was how many siblings my paternal grandparents had. I did not spend as much time with this part of the family which meant I missed out on many stories about its history. I left a few of the siblings off of my genogram, but they all seemed to have the same careers if they worked. Most of the women stayed at home with the men involved with farming. Most had a shortened education where on my mother's side, more completed high school, had some training in college, and jobs that took them away from the house.

I was proud to realized that many of my ancestors for both sides had served in the military, if even for a short while.Although none retired from the service, it seemed to be a trend for both families. The career path after the military varies so it seems no pattern is present. The one idea that seemed evident throughout was the fact that my ancestors worked. They may not have chosen high paying careers, but they were not afraid of hard work.

My decision to become a counselor was triggered by the fact that I was not coaching this year after having doing so for the past twelve years. Having the extra time, I re-evaluated what my future held. I have always been one that others came to when having troubles. This began back when I was beginning high school. I remember friends needing someone to listen to them and perhaps have some sound logical advice. I guess I was good at that because they would come back to me when the next situation would arise. Remembering this helped guide me into this decision.

First Try at Blogging

I have not had a need to create a blog until now. Hopefully I will have important news to share with others using this blog. I do know much information can be shared using a site like this one.
